He Is My Strength, My Fight with Diabetes, Cancer and More

If you or someone you love are battling diabetes, cancer or any other type of illness, or infertility, this post may help you or them.  By giving you hope, and offering you simple things that you can do to make the journey easier.  My full story is super long, it took me almost 30 minutes to record it all.  But, I have a shorter version for you.

How I Manage My Diabetes

The way I manage my blood sugars, is mostly through lifestyle.   What I mean specifically, is eating a healthy diet, and at every meal or snack (except the low episodes) I eat healthy lean protein and fats, along with fiber.  The combination of those macronutrients keep my blood sugar level.  The fiber helps to counteract the carbohydrates, and the fat and protein slow down the digestion of the carbohydrates, which also play a role in keeping my blood sugars level.  To keep my blodd sugars in check I use carb counting.  If you don’t know about carb counting, read below.  If you already know about carb counting, then you can skip the next paragraph.  However, it may provide you with additional information you did not know about.

Carb Counting:

Carb counting is exactly what it is called.  You count the carbs that will affect your blood sugar.  You don’t look at the sugar in the meal or snack, you look at only the carbs.  There are ways of reducing the carbs in a meal or snack, you can do this by eating lots of fiber.  For every 5 grams of fiber you can remove half the amount of grams of fiber from the amount of carbohydrate grams.  That means if you have a meal that has 30 grams of carbohydrates, and has 8 grams of fiber, then you can remove 4 grams of carbohydrates.  Making the meal only 26 grams of carbohydrates.

Here’s another example, a meal has 45 grams of carbohydrates, and 6 grams of fiber.  That means you can remove 3 grams of carbohydrates from the meal, making it only 42 carbohydrates.  An equation for this looks like, 6 / 2 = 3, then 45 - 3 = 42 carbohydrates.  This means you would only give insulin for the 42 grams of carbohydrates.

At first, this can be confusing and hard to understand.  But, once you start doing it, it becomes second nature and really easy.

How to Lower Your Blood Sugars

Shorty after I had my son I had a hard time controlling my blood sugars from the changing hormones.  I tried many things, but the one thing that had the biggest impact was exercise.  If I didn’t exercise for a while, which does not happen often, since I love to exercise, my blood sugars would be higher than when I worked out regularly.  However, there was a period when I was healing and not exercising, in order to keep my blood sugars down I would need to give myself 12 to 14 units of short acting insulin in the morning.  But, once I started exercising and kept at it, I was able to lower that to only 7 - 8 units.

Additional Help with Lowering Your Blood Glucose

Then, I added in the Glucose Regulating Complex and was able to drop it down to only 4 - 5 units.  The least amount of insulin required to control diabetes the better.  Because, even the insulin has nasty side effects, like issues with your eyes.  Of course, the side effects of the insulin are nowhere near as bad as uncontrolled blood sugars, but still the less insulin the better.

Also, stress management plays a huge role in controlling blood sugars.  That is where exercise can also help by being a stress reliever.  I do anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes of yoga every day.  The intensity varies from hard and vigorous, to super light and easy.  The variety helps to strengthen, calm and stretch my muscles.  Doing a combo of hard, medium and light workouts, works really well for me and it could help you even if you don’t have diabetes.  I add-in other types of workouts now and then, such as weight lifting or strengthening moves, kickboxing, dance and pilates.  I like to change things up, or I get bored.  Plus, it keeps the body guessing, which is a great thing. 

Boost Your Immune System to Keep Your Blood Sugar Level

Another way I keep my blood sugars under control, is not getting sick as often as I use to, because now I have a stronger immune system.  To boost my immune system so I can fight any germs I come in contact with, I take NutriFeron daily.  It is the best way of boosting the body's ability to fight off infections and foreign bodies.

Lastly, by reducing the amount of fat I have on my body, more specifically in the abdomen, I can control my blood sugars better.  Having diabetes automatically gives me a high risk of heart disease, but by eating a super healthy diet of mostly vegetables and fruits, legumes, complex carbs and whole grains (non-gluten), lean protein and healthy fats (no dairy).  Plus, by taking high quality supplements that are proven to make me healthier from the inside out, I greatly reduce my risk and you can too!

Preventing Cancer from Recurring

I fought two types of cancer, and kicked both of their behinds.  Everyone’s battle with cancer is different, so don’t compare mine to yours or to someone you know.  Just know that cancer doesn’t always win the battle and that people have come out on the other side healthier than before.

 

I take action now to help prevent the recurrence of both skin cancer and lung cancer.  FYI, I am not a smoker, so having lung cancer was a complete shock to me.

Skin Cancer Protection

Let’s talk about how I protect my skin and how you can from the sun by eating my sunscreen.  Yes, I said eating.  Not literally eating a bottle of sunscreen, but eating foods and taking supplements that help my body naturally protect itself from the sun.  Vitamin C, Carotenoids and CoQ10 protect the body from cancer, including skin cancer.  By taking in foods that contains these fantastic vitamins and minerals you can protect yourself from the sun’s rays.  If you think your diet is lacking these, or just don’t want to take the chance that you haven’t eat enough of these foods on a daily basis, you can up your supply by taking High quality supplements.

Protect Your Skin with the Right Kind of Sunscreen

I also wear all natural, safe sunscreen.  No chemical filled ones that actually give you skin cancer, instead of preventing it.  Not all sunscreens are created equal.  I don’t like the ones that have zinc, because they clog my pores and leave a icky white film on my skin.  The BEST all-natural sunscreen that I’ve found is from Enfuselle.  I’ve tried pretty much every ‘natural’ sunscreen on the market and nothing has come close to Enfuselle!  FYI applying one coat and then being out in the sun all day will not work.  You need to reapply every 2 hours, or more often if you are in water (about 1 and a half hours or sooner if in the water).  Any kind of sunscreen that is greater than spf 50 is horrible for you and doesn’t protect you any better, they just have more chemicals, so please don’t use those.

The Best Sunscreen that I have found is Enfuselle

I also try to stay in the shade when possible and if I’m going to be in the sun for a while I wear a pretty sun hat.

Cancer Prevention for All Types

To keep my body as alkaline as possible I eat mostly whole foods in their natural state.  No processed food, not fast food, no junk food, no sugary foods or drinks.  I also don’t eat gluten or dairy, because I have an intolerance to them and they both cause lots of inflammation in the body, even if you don’t have an intolerance to them.  The more inflammation in the body the easier it is for it to become diseased or even get cancer.  Which of course, no one wants.

FYI in order for cancer to grow, it has to live in an acid environment.  Also known as a sugary environment that has lots of inflammation.  Which is the opposite of an alkaline environment.  It can be hard to keep the body purely alkaline, because there is sugar hidden in pretty much everything.  So, eating a diet high in alkaline foods and not eating or greatly reducing the processed foods you ingest, will help to get your body more alkaline.  Cancer can’t grown in a purply alkaline environment. 

How I Alkalize My Body (And You Can Too!)

To start my morning off by alkalizing my body I drink a tall glass of water with fresh squeezed lemon juice from a whole lemon and add in my Energizing Pomegranate Tea.  The tea is made of white, green and herbal teas to give natural energy without any added sugar.  This stuff is better than coffee at energizing me and the energy doesn't cause a crash like coffee does.

Also, keeping level blood sugars helps to keep the body alkaline.  So, eating foods with lots of fiber, lean protein and healthy fats is best.

Alkalizing Foods and Spices List

Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumber, Kale, Lettuce, Onions, Peas, Peppers, Spinach, apple, Banana (unripe or barely ripe), Berries, Cantaloupe, Grapes, Melon, Lemon, Orange, Peach, Pear, Watermelon, Almonds, Chestnuts, Tofu, Cinnamon, Curry, Ginger, Mustard, Sea Salt* 

My daily diet looks something like this,...

First thing in the morning my yoga on an empty stomach (most days)

  • Meal 1:  One whole apple with skin, sliced and sprinkled with lots of cinnamon and  2 tbsp sunflower seed butter or peanut butter.

  • Meal 2: Life Shake, I mix with 1 cup almond or coconut milk, 1 cup fresh spinach and 1 non-ripe banana or berries.(sometimes I change up the smoothie, but this is my go to recipe.)
  • Meal 3: Salad with dark leafy greens, bell peppers, carrots, celery, nuts and/or beans and balsamic dressings or avocado.
  • Meal 4: Carrots with hummus, or 2 protein bites, or fruit such as melon, berries or grapes. (If I’m out I sometimes eat a 180 Snack Bar.)
  • Meal 5: Lean protein such as legumes, rice or quinoa, with slightly cooked or raw veggies.
  • Optional Meal 6:  (I usually skip this meal, depends on my blood sugar and if I’m hungry.)  Popcorn with nut butter, or carrot sticks, or kale chips, or non-dairy coconut yogurt with nuts and berries.

How I Keep My Lungs Clear

In the past, I didn’t know that commercial cleaners are toxic for us to breath, and can be deadly if you use some of them in the same room at the same time.  They pollute our planet.  The water, the dirt and air.  Mostly, they pollute our homes.  The best way to keep your home, which should be the safest place for you and the breathing air in it as clean as possible, is to make sure your home only has natural cleaners.  And, I’m not talking about the companies that do greenwashing.  Which is where they say they are green, but truly aren’t.  The one I have found that is truly natural and beyond organic is from Shaklee.  By keeping my home toxic free as possible, it greatly reduces my chance of having my lung cancer come back.  Also, your skin absorbs whatever it comes in contact with.  A little fun fact, our skin absorbs whatever it comes in contact with in less than 30 seconds.  Scientist and doctors can tell what kind of detergent a person uses by a urine test, because your bodies absorbs it from our cloths.  Using all-natural detergent is extremely important.  Please, don’t use bleach, it is so toxic and highly flammable.  Also, if you burn candles, only use the natural burning kind, and if possible don’t even burn those.  Fill your home with plants, because they will clean the air naturally.

After Pregnancy Health and Weight Loss

To rid my body of the horrible preeclampsia toxins I did multiple 5 Day Resets.  These resets help the body to get rid of any toxins, sugar and extra weight.  They flush out the body by filling it with raw non-starchy vegetables and certain fruits.  It is super easy to do these resets, that’s why I was able to do it multiple times, even when I was nursing.  To get more info on them I’ll be making a post about them soon.
